Heartburn and Pregnancy – An Inseparable Duo

Why the Heartburn while Pregnant?
Though it may be true that pregnancy is beautiful because it brings a new life into the world, there is a host of different problems that come with it for the woman that most people have no idea about.

Most commonly, women notice that heartburn and pregnancy tend to go hand-in-hand, and though it generally isn't very harmful, it can sure be annoying and even debilitating.

Why the Heartburn while Pregnant?

To start at the beginning, heartburn can be most easily described as a burning sensation at the lower part of the throat, caused by rising acid from the stomach. Generally, it is caused by hormonal changes and physical exertions. When you are pregnant, the body produces a hormone called progesterone so as to relax the uterus muscles.

As a side effect, the hormone also relaxes the valve between the stomach and esophagus, causing the gastric liquids to rise, in turn causing the heartburn. Also, when you are going later into the pregnancy, the baby’s growing body will also contribute to pushing the gastric juices up your throat.

Heartburn and Pregnancy – How to Fight Back

So what exactly is there that you can do about suffering from heartburn while pregnant?

  • For starters, you can avoid drinks and foods which are known to cause distress in your digestive system. These include gasified drinks, alcohol, caffeine, chocolate, citric fruits, processed meats, spicy foods, fatty foods, and a few others.
  • The next thing you can do is avoid eating large meals as a grand quantity of food is hard to digest and will cause the production of a bunch of gastric acid. If need be, eat more smaller meals throughout the course of the entire day. Also, it is important not to drink large amounts of fluids during meals so as not to distend the stomach.
  • Once you are done eating, eat a bit of chewing gum in order to stimulate your salivary glands. The ensuing production of saliva will go down into your stomach, mix in with the gastric acids, contributing to their neutralization.
  • As far as sleeping goes, do not eat anything two to three hours before going to bed, and when you are lying down, try to have your upper body propped up a bit. This will keep the acid in your stomach for the duration of your sleep and prevent it from being active in large quantities.

Though heartburn and pregnancy may very well be the most annoying duo of good and evil women have to face, there certainly isn't a lack of remedies and DIY treatments you can perform to relieve yourself from it. Remember, pregnancy isn't what it’s made out to be in movies and cartoons, and regardless of what approach you take, there will be some suffering involved. Just tell yourself that it will all be over after nine months at the latest, and in the end, those troubles will have been more than worth it.
