Why and How to Use a Coconut Oil Hair Mask

Use of coconut oil hair mask

Though there certainly are standard ways of using coconut oil for your hair, by far one of the most ignored and effective ones is the coconut oil hair mask. Why exactly would you want to use a mask rather than the oil itself?

For starters, because the mask is left on for a long period of time, the hair has a greater opportunity to absorb all of the nutrients you are feeding it with.

In other words, it will amplify the coconut oil’s effects. Second, the mask is made from a mixture of different ingredients, all of them adding to the amount of protein your hair is fed, helping it to grow faster and stronger.

Putting Together Your Coconut Oil Hair Mask

And now, on with the real show. The following formula I will give you enough product to completely cover a head of both medium and long hair. However, because we all have different styles and hair lengths, you will most likely have to adjust the quantity of ingredients used. Also, depending on the thickness and the results you want to achieve, you may try balancing the different oils shown below.

  • In any case, you are first going to need three tablespoons of organic virgin coconut oil. It is important for it to be organic and virgin, for anything else is virtually guaranteed to contain harmful and useless ingredients, not to mention it will more than likely lack potency.
  • Following that, mix in two to three tablespoons of olive oil with the coconut oil. If you can, try to get also get organic and virgin olive oil for the same reasons described above.
  • Finally, you will need around two and a half to three teaspoons of unflavored gelatin. This is because it contains tons upon tons of protein and has the perfect consistency to create a mask.

Applying the Coconut Oil Hair Mask

Once all the ingredients are ready, pour them in a bowl and mix them until the product becomes homogenous (meaning you can no longer see the individual ingredients used, but rather, only the sum of them).

Make sure your hair is dry (one of the most important factors to the masks’ success), and then carefully apply coconut oil hair mask on your head. First, use scalp massaging techniques to get the middle of your head, and then apply it from the roots of your hairs to their ends. It is important to ensure that your hair is covered as much as possible by the mixture.

Once the mixture is on your hair, wait around thirty to forty minutes (be careful, your hair will drip and it will get a bit messy, so you should use a shower cap) and rinse it off with lukewarm water. After that, take a normal shower with your regular shampoo and conditioner, and you’re home free!

  1. My darling daughter was recently in town for a visit. I can’t tell you how much fun it was to introduce her to my new home, the San Francisco Bay area. We had an amazing time and once again, I was reminded what a remarkable young woman she has grown into. I love that at 23, she is into healthy eating and skin care
